The 19 class diesel shunter is the fifth shunter purchased by KTMB from Hitachi and totaly departs from its traditional rigid three axle configuration of previous shunter classes to the familiar Bo-Bo configuration which is much kinder to the tracks. Another advantage is that the shunting speed also increases thus reduce the time taken to occupy the main line. Ten units of these shunter arrived and put into service in 1983.
Today, the shunter performs many shunting duties all over ktmb network and its versatility have been proven with its ten unit fleet still in active service. The recent refurbishment in 2007 have extended its service life, which as at 2007 the shunter age is 24 years. The shunter braking system is air for the shunter and vacuum for the train, but during the recent refurbishment, only 19104 receives additional train air brake capability, suitable for intercity coaches shunting duties of which all of them are air brake only.
